Hyper-Focus

One classic feature of Aspies is an ability for hyper-focus: being able to concentrate completely on a single thing, blocking out everything else.

As always, this is a mixed bag. It brings about advantages and disadvantages, and second-order effects.

The ability to hyper-focus can make an Aspie excellent at an activity. Strongly linked to the compartmentalization, it will allow the Aspie to steer and manage a situation or solve a problem, no matter how distracting, scary, or difficult the circumstances are. So, again, this Aspie might be the ideal crisis manager.

The Aspie might also become outstandingly good at something over a prolonged time of hyper-focusing on that one thing. This might be or become that person’s special interest.

On the other hand, the hyper-focusing drowns out all else. The person might not be aware of or notice anything else during that time. Typically, an Aspie child will be called dreamy, lazy, inattentive.

The second order effects of that judgement sadly are often scolding, bullying, stigma, neglect. Depending on the environment, this can in turn result in deteriorating performance at school, the workplace, and social life. That’s where many Aspies find themselves some day.

The luckier ones, may become the wealthiest person on the planet. In all seriousness, with some luck, hyper-focus will lead to exceptional performance and results, or at least an interesting and rewarding life experience.
